The "Crooked Spire"
St.Mary and All Saint's Church
Chesterfield, Derbyshire
The famous ‘crooked spire’ (oak frame clad with lead) was added to the 14th century tower around 1362. The spire merely sits into the top of the tower, held only by it’s weight and low centre of gravity. It rises to a height of 70m (228ft) above the ground and leans 2.89m (9ft 6in) to the south-west. The spiral twist at the base is about 45° from west to east.
