Mallard at Retford

A very famous locomotive, even in 1955, and a famous location.

Can be bought as an artist-signed ink-jet (giclée) print. Size up to 18in (450mm) wide. £14 + Post and Packing for UK £3.50 (other areas please ask)

Nottingham Victoria

Externally, this was not a pretty station, but on the inside it was “Cathedral-like”. Closed and demolished in 1967, it had served the city for only 70 years. It’s loss is still mourned today.

Can be bought as an artist-signed ink-jet (giclée) print. Size up to 20in (508mm) wide. £16 + Post and Packing for UK £3.50 (other areas please ask).

Planet

Another example of an air-brush and detail locomotive study. As has happened so many times before, the publisher of the magazine went bust owing me money, but the illustrations were an interesting job at the time.
Prints can be produced from several locomotive profiles. Please ask.

Prince Charles on Prince

Prince Charles driving the Ffestiniog Railway’s locomotive “Prince” at Rydd Ddu on the Welsh Highland.

Available as a signed litho print. Size 14 x 19in (350 x 482mm) £14 + Post and Packing for UK £3.50 (other areas please ask).

Shap

Shap was an exciting place in the days of steam. Northbound ‘Coronation’ Pacific, 46254 ‘City of Stoke on Trent’ is seen here approaching the summit. This view today is badly scarred by the M6 motorway, but all is not lost, through pictures we can look back and use our imaginations. When this picture was reproduced as a Christmas card a few years ago, I had a delightful phone call from a lady that used to live in that house!

Shunters at Barrow Hill

Men, who even in later life, could run across points, crossings and sleepers to keep up with the free-wheeling wagons - and nimbly pin down the brakes! This was not a job for the faint-hearted of course. The long hook was essentially for uncoupling, but contrary to regulations, was often used to pin down the brakes too!

On the left is Walter (Mutt) Thompson, who later became an Inspector. His wife was proud and delighted to see this painting, but told me that Walter had died ten years before. We are still hoping to trace the family of his colleague and friend Albert Whittaker. The painting shows Barrow Hill ‘down’ sidings and was inspired by the Museum’s collection of miscellaneous railway equipment and tools.

The original was exhibited at the National Railway Museum, York, after being published in a Guild of Railway Artists book. I later gave it to Barrow Hill Roundhouse on permanent loan.

Can be bought as an artist-signed ink-jet (giclée) print. Size up to 24in (600mm) wide. £18 + Post and Packing for UK £3.50 (other areas please ask).

Steam Special

Another scene used for The Railway Children charity, Christmas cards. It shows the V2 “Green Arrow” at York around 1979. With constantly changing regulations, we are always in great danger of losing the sight of a steam train on the main line, it would be a great pity though. What better way is there of getting the next generation interested in railways.

Ex.LMS Duchess

Available as a low-cost A4 litho print on 120gsm gloss art at £2.00 or as an artist-signed ink-jet (giclée) print. Size up to 18in (450mm) wide. £14 + Post and Packing for UK £3.50 (other areas please ask).

Ex.LMS Garratt

By English standards, these were big engines and not popular with the crews. I must have seen one of these, even though they had all gone by 1958, but I sadly have no memory of them.

Can be bought as an artist-signed ink-jet (giclée) print. Size up to 18in (450mm) wide. £14 + Post and Packing for UK £3.50 (other areas please ask).
